Monthly report August

In the beginning it was important for us to make a good relation with the children. We tried to learn their names within the first couple of days. It was also important for us to get an overlook of what the center is all about and what the daily routines are. As students/volunteers we need a lot of guidance in the begin to work out our own routines. We need to figure out where to draw the line when it comes to their behavior at the center. We had an episode with the boys, we had just bought at new small basketball for them, which suddenly had disappeared and nobody knew where it was. We told them that they would get the bigger ball before the other ball was back at the center, and the next day they brought it back. It was nice that they listened to us and understood what the consequence would be.
The boys has a tendency to be violent to each other and we will, during our stay, try to teacher them not to use violence has a solution. And we feel that they have improved already.
Activities:
We spent a lot of time creating our own bingo game with the boys. They had to draw and be creative, and it was nice to see how focused they were on doing a good job.
Geographic game: We played the geographic game one day as the other students told us it was a great success. They were very excited about it and the teams achieved a great team spirit.
Beach-trip: The trip we took to the beach was a success. Everybody had a great time and it was nice for us to see them in other surroundings. We wanted to do the trip to mix the older boys with the younger boys so that they could have a good time together. The older boys has a tendency to be mean to the small boys and we will try to create a better group dynamic for all the children. The trip was also planned so we could improve our relations with the children.
Minute to win: a lot of small challenges where the boys could win prices. We split them in two groups, the big boys in one group and the smaller boys in another. We made these games so that they could accomplish something on their own while the other boys were cheering for them. We chose to make some other challenges for the small boys because the other games were too hard for them. This is a thing will do again because we would like the boys to become better at waiting for their turn. The first time we play this game they were messing it up for each other because they were so impatient to wait for their turn. We also need to make a better structure for next time, because it took too long to start the games.
Basketball tournament: Some of the boys suggested a basketball tournament, so we went to Sport Complex to do that. We made the teams, and since none of us are very good at basket they took turns in be the judge. The boys did great job and we realized that we have to plan a thing like this a bit better for next time because we forgot to bring a couple of important things, and next time we will consider buying shirts for them so t is easier to tell the teams. We focused on making the teams even and keeping up good teamspirit.
Limbo: Limbo was a great success. Compared to minute to win it they completely understood that you have to wait your turn. And they had lots of fun.
Pictureday: We showed pictures on the projector from some of the things we have done, like the beach and basketball tournament. The boys enjoyed seeing themselves on the screen and this is something we will keep up doing every month.
Danish week: we wanted to teach them about Denmark and our culture, so we showed them pictures of different places in Denmark and told them about differences compared to the Philippines. We also made a short presentation of ourselves with pictures of our families. We also tried to teach them so Danish words. We made a sheet with words where they had to draw lines between the Danish words and the Visayan word. Thursday we cooked Danish meatballs for the kids and Friday was movie day where we saw: … and eat danisk cake
We have started a project focusing on dental hygiene. Onwards we will brush teeth one time a day, if possible. We bought toothbrushes, and have written name on the brushes for increasing the hygiene safety.
Mie, Natascha, Rasmus, Karoline, Pernille and Maria went out where the boys live Monday and Tuesday to get a better picture of where they live and getting to know them better. We took photos of the different families and went to Park Mall and got the photos printed for good memories to the boys. Wednesday a new volunteer started; Kasper.
We have used a great part of the week making small games and just being active. During the week we have also had a beauty parlour with nail polish and wax for the hair. We have also celebrated birthday for Stephen L. We bought fruit and watched a dance movie.
Though out the mounth we have started different activities, also some focusing on the one on one contact.  At the time here in Development Center we will make them feel wanted and give them the care they need.
Please let us know if we’re doing something that is not convenient, salamat

Monthly report September

This September we have made new and old activities such as minute to win it, beauty salon, shown parkour videos, cooked food, made our own OL, played draw and tell and been at the beach.
We have played minute to win it one time before. It can be a team or solo activity. Last time the boys were one by one. This time the boys were put in to teams with two on each team. We all thought that this time went better than the first time. We made some changes from last time such as showing the boys the rules, have more focus on cheating and bad sportsmanship. We chose to divide the boys into teams to strengthen their teamwork,   companionship and team spirit.
The boys very much like to paint their nails in many different colors. So we open the beauty salon for the second time and painted the boys nails. First time where a hit so we extended the salon with hairwax
Two of our other fellow students from Denmark are studying parkour which is a very popular and awesome phenomenon. We would very much like the boys to try it and thus we watched some videos with people doing parkour to prepare the boys for the activity. It is a very useful sport that strengthens their body and also a very fun way to get from A to B.
We want them to see how they can use the nature / city invironmen and have a good time while doing it. If they are spend much time on the street it would be better if they did something good.
We have introduced food day once a month and this month the menu was Swedish sausage dish made of potatoes, onions, sausage and gravy a very well known dish in Scandinavia.

As some of us have the subject SKB in school, we made our own Olympics. In the OL week we have been played, ping-pong, volleyball, basketball, run 100 meters and jumped length jumps. There have almost been held the Olympics in the world, which were an inspiration source for the theme Olympics. The boys are always playing basketball and thus we thought it would be fun if they tried different sports. Team sports are very team oriented and therefore we focused on the boys' abilities to be cooperating

We played the game “draw and tell” because of the boys creative skills and also for the boys to extend their repertoire.

We wanted the boys to go to Family Park to use the pool. Unfortunately the pool was close because of renovation. So we had to go to the beach instead. We wanted to go to the pool to give the boys a fun day outside the center and of the street.

Monthly report: October 2012

Face painting: We spent a whole day doing face paint to develop the children’s creative skills and have the boys interact despite the age difference. The older boys were very good at helping out the small boys. And they had a great time.
Music video: The boys are very fond of dancing and we decided to give them a chance to make their own music video. We played music and recorded them dancing, and now we are working on editing the video so they can see it at the end of November.
Draw and guess: In this game the boys took turns in picking folded paper with a word on, for examplea horse, and then they had to draw it on the whiteboard, while the other boys had to guess what he was drawing. This game was to improve their English skills and challenge their drawing skills.
Bingo game: The boys had been working on this game for a while. They had to make their own bingo pictures that would be used in the game. This game was about making the boys work together as a team and communicate with their teammates; otherwise they had no chance in winning.
Fishing trip:
Halloween: We spent a day making scary masks with the boys. We brought different colors of papers, glue and scissors, and then the children could make their own mask. This was, again, to improve their creative skills and to make a fun Halloween activity.
Besides the activities above we had a day where we were cooking with the children, we have been watching movies, playing lots of other small games and been spending a lot of time drawing which a lot of the new children have been enjoying very much.
